Zanjan Jameh Mosque

The Jameh Mosque of Zanjan is a prominent tourist attraction located in the historic part of the city. Constructed in 1826 during the Qajar era, this mosque was designed to serve as a center for teaching, prayer, and community gatherings for the local religious scholar, Seyyed Mohammad Mojtahed Sardani. This historical complex is one of the largest and most beautiful mosques in Zanjan, featuring a four-iwan architectural style. The four iwans are symmetrically arranged around the courtyard, which once housed a pond surrounded by vibrant gardens, although these have since faded. The northern and southern iwans are adorned with decorative elements such as brick inscriptions, intricate tile work, and plant motifs created using a seven-color tile technique, reflecting the artistic style of the Qajar period. The mosque's dome is double-layered and covered with turquoise tiles. Inscribed on the dome in thuluth script is a verse from Surah Al-Dahr, adding to its aesthetic appeal. Additionally, the mosque includes four Shabestans (night prayer halls), each equipped with a minbar.

Zanjan Rakhtshooy Khaneh

The historical complex of the Rakhtshooy Khaneh, or Laundry House, is situated in the heart of Zanjan's historic district, within a densely populated residential area. Built in 1928 by Zanjan's first mayor, this unique facility was designed to provide women with a safe and sheltered space to wash clothes during the cold winter months. The harsh winters in Zanjan made laundry tasks particularly challenging, and this public building is rare in its specific function. The structure has been carefully restored and is now home to the Zanjan Anthropological Museum, making it one of the city's key tourist attractions.
The museum showcases a variety of local clothing and women's jewelry, allowing visitors to explore aspects of traditional Zanjan life from the previous century. Inside, visitors can find sculptures depicting women engaged in laundry work, offering a glimpse into the daily lives of Zanjan's residents. The Rakhtshooy Khaneh consists of several sections, including a management area and a laundry area divided into four parts. Originally, the facility featured interconnected pools designed for efficient water use during washing processes. The building's architectural style reflects the craftsmanship of the late Qajar and early Pahlavi eras.

Zanjan Colorful Mountains

The Aladaglar Mountains, also known as the Rainbow Mountains, are a stunning natural phenomenon located in Zanjan Province, Iran. Characterized by their vibrant clay hills, these mountains display a breathtaking palette of colors, including red, copper, brown, yellow, white, green, and blue. The visual spectacle is particularly striking after rainfall when the wet clay enhances the colors and creates a mesmerizing landscape. These mountains date back approximately 15 million years and are formed from iron-rich sediments that have undergone oxidation over millennia. Each color in the Aladaglar Mountains corresponds to specific minerals—green indicates copper, while red suggests oxidizing conditions with abundant oxygen. The interplay of sunlight at various angles further amplifies the golden and copper hues, making the landscape appear almost otherworldly.

Zanjan Behestan Castle

Behestan Castle, is a remarkable historical site situated alongside the Qezel Ozan River in Zanjan Province, Iran. This castle, one of the 20 historical fortifications in the region, has origins that can be traced back to the Medes era, around 4,000 years ago, and was later used during the Sassanid period (226-651 CE) and into the Islamic era. The construction of Behestan Castle involved excavating into the rugged mountain ridge, where builders removed soil and stones to create a complex layout of rooms, corridors, and staircases. The upper levels were designed for defense, while the lower levels served as food storage facilities. The architectural design reflects a unique blend of functionality and artistry, showcasing the skills of its builders.
Despite its historical significance and unique architecture, Behestan Castle has suffered from rapid erosion due to strong winds and the nearby river's flow. This erosion has led to significant damage over time, particularly to the lower levels of the structure.

Zanjan Chehel Sotoun Mosque

The Chehel Sotoun Mosque is a significant historical mosque located in Zanjan, recognized as the most prominent theological school during the Qajar era. Situated in the Zanjan bazaar, this mosque dates back to 1284 AH (Islamic calendar). It boasts a spacious courtyard and expansive prayer halls, characterized by beautifully symmetrical arches supported by 32 robust columns. The name "Chehel Sotoun," which translates to "Forty Columns," reflects the mosque's numerous columns. The mihrab is exquisitely decorated with tile work featuring floral motifs, showcasing the architectural style of the Qajar period. This mosque not only serves as a place of worship but also stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Zanjan.

Zanjan Archaeology Museum

The "Salt Men" refers to six mummies discovered in the winter of 1993 at the Chehrabad salt mine in Zanjan. These mummies were unearthed during the excavation and extraction of salt from the mine. The first mummy found was a half-body with a beard, long hair, and a gold earring in its ear, accompanied by artifacts such as a piece of basket, wooden nails, and plant ropes. Scientific analyses determined that three of the Salt Men date back to the Achaemenid period, while the other two are from the late Sasanian era. The Salt Men are currently displayed at the Zanjan Archaeological Museum, located in the historic Zolfaqarian building, which is recognized as a national heritage site of Iran. This museum is one of Zanjan's most intriguing attractions and is situated close to the city's laundry house.

Zanjan Azam Hosseiniyeh

The Azam Hosseiniyeh in Zanjan stands out as a significant religious tourism destination in Iran, particularly during the month of Muharram. With a history spanning approximately a century, it is recognized as the second largest site for sacrificial offerings in the Islamic world, following Mina. This venue functions both as a mosque and a mourning space. On the eighth day of Muharram, known locally as "Yom al-Abbas," mourning processions from various cities and villages converge at the Hosseiniyeh. Residents from Zanjan and surrounding provinces contribute their offerings on the evening of Tasua, which is the night before Ashura. This procession is considered the largest gathering in Iran dedicated to Imam Hussein (AS) and honors his noble brother, Abul Fazl Abbas (AS). The procession typically starts at the Hosseiniyeh and concludes at Imamzadeh Ibrahim around sunset.
In 2012, participation in this procession exceeded 500,000 mourners, with records indicating that nearly 13,000 animals were sacrificed along the route that year. Cash donations from attendees totaled approximately 1.8 billion tomans. As a result, the Hosseiniyeh has evolved into a vital cultural and religious center in Zanjan, drawing both local and international visitors to its significant ceremonies. The Azam Hosseiniyeh is most renowned for its annual mourning parade during Muharram. This event attracts people not only from across Iran but also from neighboring countries, who gather to participate and make various types of donations.

Zanjan Katalekhor Cave

The name "Kataleh Khor" translates to "Mountain of the Sun." Geological studies suggest that the cave's formation dates back to the Jurassic period, approximately 120 million years ago. It is believed that this cave may be connected to the Ali Sadr Cave in Hamadan province. Discovered around 90 years ago, Kataleh Khor has become one of Zanjan's key tourist attractions. The cave's structure is remarkable, featuring multiple layers, several underground tunnels, ancient fossils, and pure limestone that have formed over millions of years. Natural formations have created stunning stalagmites and stalactites throughout the corridors and chambers, enhancing the cave's aesthetic appeal. In some passageways, skeletons of animals have been discovered that do not resemble any modern species and likely belong to extinct generations from past eras. Kataleh Khor is notable for its unique features, including at least seven floors, although only three have been explored so far. Visitors can experience breathtaking views of vast chambers adorned with intricate rock formations. The cave also offers two visiting routes: one accessible to the public and another designated for experienced cavers. This captivating underground wonder continues to attract nature lovers and researchers alike.

Zanjan Grand Bazaar

The Qeysarieh Bazaar, also known as the traditional bazaar of Zanjan, features the longest covered structure of its kind in Iran. This 200-year-old market is a major tourist attraction in Zanjan and encompasses approximately 1,000 shops, corridors, passageways, historical caravanserais, baths, and mosques. The traditional Zanjan Bazaar remains a vibrant hub of activity in the city, with its shops maintaining their traditional style and impressive architecture. Visitors can find a diverse array of goods for sale, including jewelry, shoes, carpets, traditional medicine, Zanjan knives, charuq (traditional footwear), and exquisite metalwork. The bazaar not only serves as a commercial center but also embodies the rich cultural heritage of the region. Additionally, the market is divided into eight distinct sections based on various trades, such as goldsmiths and shoemakers, further enhancing its charm and historical significance.

Zanjan Dome of Soltaniyeh

The Dome of Soltaniyeh, a prominent tourist attraction in Zanjan, was constructed during the Ilkhanid period under the reign of the Mongol ruler Öljeitü. This architectural marvel is the largest dome in Iran and is recognized as the first double-shell dome in the world. It ranks as the third largest brick dome globally, following the domes of Florence Cathedral and Hagia Sophia, and is distinguished by its striking turquoise color and impressive height, making it visible from afar. Öljeitü, who converted to Islam influenced by one of his wives, Allameh Helli, and his minister Sheikh Fazlollah, commissioned the mausoleum after visiting the tombs of Imam Ali and Imam Hussein. His intention was to transfer their graves to this site; however, he ultimately abandoned this plan due to opposition from Shia scholars. As a result, the structure was repurposed as his own tomb. The Dome of Soltaniyeh stands as a testament to the architectural innovation of its time and remains a significant cultural and historical site in Iran.

Zanjan Qezel Ozan River

Qezel Ozan, meaning "floating gold," is one of Zanjan's most captivating attractions. This river flows through northwestern and northern Iran, traversing the provinces of Kurdistan, Zanjan, East Azerbaijan, Ardabil, and Gilan. Originating from the Zagros Mountains in Kurdistan, it empties into the Caspian Sea. With a length of approximately 670 kilometers, Qezel Ozan is the second longest river in Iran, following the Karun. Protected Area of Zanjan

The presence of the Qezel Ozan and Angouran rivers, along with the topographical conditions of Zanjan province, has led to the formation of diverse animal and plant habitats, resulting in several protected and hunting-restricted areas in Zanjan. The Sorkhabad Protected Area, features semi-arid and Mediterranean climates, serving as a habitat for various plant species, wild animals, reptiles, birds, and fish. The Sohrin plain within this region is an exceptional habitat for deer.
The Angouran Protected Area, is a mountainous and hilly region characterized by Mediterranean and semi-humid climates. Its unique vegetation includes a variety of plants such as tulips, poppies, sorrow flowers, almond trees, barberry, walnuts, and wild olives. This area provides a suitable habitat for wild sheep, Armenian sheep, pashtun goats, various wildlife species, birds, reptiles, and fish.
The Fil-e-Khaseh Hunting Prohibition Area, features exceptional vegetation and is home to various Iranian wildlife species, domestic birds, predatory birds, and various reptiles. The Kharmanesar Hunting Prohibition Area is situated in on the southern slopes of the Alborz mountain range in Tarom County. It boasts unique plant species and captivating wildlife. Lastly the Khorasanlu Hunting Prohibition Area is a mountainous region in Zanjan that receives high levels of rainfall.

Zanjan Doodkesh-e Jen

The "Doodkesh Jen," meaning "Chimney of the Jinn," is located 20 kilometers from Mahneshan County and 120 kilometers from Zanjan. This formation resembles a mushroom-shaped rock sculpted by erosion, giving it the appearance of a tall, slender minaret topped with another stone. In geological terms, this natural phenomenon is referred to as a "hoodoo." In ancient times, locals believed that jinns were responsible for creating this unusual structure due to its bizarre appearance, which led them to name it "Doodkesh Jen." Another name for this area is "Takht-e Div," as some believe that demons rest on the flat boulders atop the columns.

Zanjan Dashkasan Temple

The Dash Kasan Temple, also known as the Dragon Temple, is a remarkable attraction in Zanjan. Dating back to the Ilkhanid period, this rock structure features two prominent dragon reliefs and several Islamic altars, reflecting influences from Mongolian and Chinese cultures during that era. Commissioned by the Mongol king Öljeitü, the temple consists of three deep, man-made caves adorned with exquisite stone carvings crafted by four Chinese artisans.

Zanjan Haj Dadash Bath

The Haj Dadash Traditional Bath, known as the only stone-column bath in Zanjan, was constructed approximately 150 years ago by an individual named Haj Dadash. This historic public bath is situated opposite the old Zanjan bazaar and the Mirzaei Mosque, and it has recently been transformed into a classic restaurant. As one of the oldest buildings in Zanjan, the Haj Dadash Bath showcases unique architectural features that reflect the craftsmanship of its time. The bath retains its original structure while offering a charming dining experience, allowing visitors to enjoy a meal in a setting rich with history. Its location near other attractions, such as the Zanjan bazaar and historical sites, makes it a convenient stop for those exploring the area.
